Drama in Speech Therapy
Date To Be Confirmed
Presented by Bev Sher (Speech and Language Pathologist). Using drama in therapy is defined as "an active, experiential approach that facilitates problem solving, setting of goals, appropriate expression of feelings and improved interpersonal skills" (National Association for Drama Therapy). As a qualified Speech Pathologist, I find that I often use skills that I acquired in my training as a Speech and Drama teacher during Speech therapy.
Drama provides the client with an opportunity to learn as well as rehearse appropriate speech/language behaviours in a variety of realistic situations whilst being in the comfort of familiar people and familiar surroundings. Drama allows the individual access to both auditory and visual information, thereby aiding in comprehension. It is an enjoyable tool to use in the small group setting- the ideal setting for social skills to be learnt and practiced.
In this workshop I will share with you some of my experiences and some of the techniques that may be effective in enhancing both treatment and assessment. This presentation is suitable for both Speech Pathologists and parents of children with speech and language difficulties.
Modifying the Curriculum for Language Impaired Primary / Secondary Students

This presentation is mainly aimed at teachers but will be of interest to parents of language-impaired students as well. Topics will cover ways in which to modify (i) the amount of work, (ii) the complexity of tasks (iii) tests and assignments (iv) teaching style. Practical strategies such as the importance of time considerations and using visual cues when teaching will all be included. There will also be an opportunity for individual questions and situations to be discussed.
